1) Replace Your Lightbulbs
In an apartment or home, lighting is used to create a comfortable environment for you, your family, and your friends to spend time. Nevertheless, by exchanging traditional light bulbs for LEDs, you can reduce your energy costs by $65 per bulb each year. Additionally, LEDs consume about 75% less energy than traditional bulbs, and last as much as ten times longer.
Regency Park Apartments is in the process of re-lamping our apartments with energy efficient lighting, to reduce our carbon footprint and help renters save on their energy bills.
2) Take Shorter Showers
Showering requires about 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Reducing your shower time by five minutes can save 5 gallons of water per shower, and up to 4,500 gallons each year. For a family of four, shorter showers can reduce water usage by nearly 20,000 gallons in a year. Additionally, shorter showers reduce the energy consumption of your water heater.
3) Open Shades During Winter
When the weather is cool, utilize the sun’s light to heat your home. Pull back shades and open blinds, especially over windows that receive direct sunlight. This reduces the energy your heating system requires to keep the temperature in your house or apartment comfortable during winter.
4) Wash Clothes in Cold Water
For most clothing, it is appropriate and in many cases better to wash them in cold water. Washing clothes in cold water will reduce the amount of energy consumed by your washing machine by as much as 90%.
